Cycles and other licenses — Alabama Permit Test
Cycles and other licenses on the Alabama permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A person 14 or 15 may get a restricted license to ride a motor-driven cycle weighing not more than 200 pounds with an engine of no more than 150cc.
Light, small-engine cycles are slower and easier to handle, which is why younger riders are limited to them.
MOTOR DRIVEN CYCLE LICENSE - Fourteen and 15 year old – Any person 14 or 15 years of age may obtain a restricted license to operate a motor driven cycle weighing not more than 200 pounds, nor exceeding 150cc engine displacement.
The motor-driven cycle license for 14- and 15-year-olds is a Class M license with a "B" restriction, meaning the holder may ride a motor-driven cycle only.
The restriction keeps a young rider off heavier motorcycles until they are old enough for the full license.
The “B” restriction indicates that the holder may operate a motor driven cycle only.
A person 16 or older may get a Class M license to ride a motorcycle, a motor vehicle with a seat or saddle designed to travel on not more than three wheels; its test comes from the Alabama Motorcycle Manual.
Riding takes different skills from driving, so the motorcycle test comes from its own manual.
MOTORCYCLE LICENSE - Sixteen years old and older – Any person 16 years of age or older may obtain a license to operate a motorcycle.
The Director of ALEA may put restrictions on your license when they are needed for you to drive safely, such as wearing corrective lenses or using mechanical aids; driving against a restriction may cost you your license.
A restriction is the condition under which you were judged safe, so driving without it removes the reason you were licensed.
Operation of a motor vehicle in violation of restrictions may result in the loss of your license.
Any person 12 or older may get a vessel license by passing the vessel examination at a driver license office, or by presenting an approved boating safety course certificate.
Boats are licensed through the same offices as cars, so the vessel license is part of the same driver record.
VESSEL LICENSE–Any person 12 years of age or older may obtain a vessel license upon passing the required vessel examination at your local driver license office.
On the test
A 14-year-old may get a license for a motor-driven cycle with an engine of no more than how much?
150cc. Light, small-engine cycles are slower and easier to handle, which is why younger riders are limited to them. Alabama Driver Manual, p.10: “MOTOR DRIVEN CYCLE LICENSE - Fourteen and 15 year old – Any person 14 or 15 years of age may obtain a restricted license to operate a motor driven cycle weighing not more than 200 pounds, nor exceeding 150cc engine displacement.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
