Move over law — Alabama Permit Test
Move over law on the Alabama permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights, or a wrecker with flashing amber lights, on a road with four or more lanes, you must vacate the lane closest to it.
People working beside traffic are struck by cars that pass too close.
When approaching emergency vehicles stopped with flashing emergency lights, or wreckers displaying flashing amber lights, motorists on roadways with four or more lanes must vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle or wrecker.
When changing lanes for a stopped emergency vehicle or wrecker is unsafe or not possible, slow to a speed at least 15 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit.
If you cannot give them room, you can give them time by slowing well down.
When changing lanes is unsafe or not possible, the driver must slow to a speed that is at least 15 miles per hour less then the posted speed limit.
On a two-lane road, move as far as you can from a stopped emergency vehicle or wrecker within your lane, and slow to 15 mph below the limit when it is 25 mph or more, or to 10 mph when the limit is 20 mph or less.
On a two-lane road you cannot change lanes, so distance in your lane and a much slower speed protect the people working.
If driving on a two-lane road, the driver must move as far away from the emergency vehicle or wrecker as possible within his or her lane and slow to a speed that is 15 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed is 25 miles per hour or greater or travel 10 miles per hour when the posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less.
On the test
On a four-lane road you approach a stopped wrecker with flashing amber lights. What must you do?
Move out of the lane nearest the wrecker. People working beside traffic are struck by cars that pass too close. Alabama Driver Manual, p.68: “When approaching emergency vehicles stopped with flashing emergency lights, or wreckers displaying flashing amber lights, motorists on roadways with four or more lanes must vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle or wrecker.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
