Getting your drivers license — California Permit Test

Getting your drivers license on the California permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Before taking the drive test you must practice with a California-licensed driver who is at least 18 years old, and at least 25 years old for a minor, seated close enough to take control of the vehicle.

The whole point of the passenger is to grab the wheel, and they cannot do that from the back seat.

Practice driving with a California-licensed driver who is at least 18 years old (25 for minors).

California Driver’s Handbook, p.3

An applicant under 18 years old must be at least 16 years old to take the behind-the-wheel drive test.

Half a year of practice sits between the permit and the test, and the birthday is part of it.

Be at least 16 years old.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.3

A minor must hold an instruction permit from California or another state for at least 6 months, or turn 18 years old, before scheduling the behind-the-wheel drive test.

Months of ordinary driving are what turn a set of rules into something you do without thinking.

Have an instruction permit from California or another state for at least

California Driver’s Handbook, p.3

A minor must practice driving for at least 50 hours with a California-licensed driver who is at least 25 years old, and 10 of those hours must be at night.

Night driving is the part a learner gets least of by accident, so the state counts it separately.

Practice driving for at least 50 hours with a California-licensed driver who is at least 25 years old.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.3

A minor must prove they completed both driver education and driver training before getting a driver’s license.

One is the classroom and the other is the car, and the state asks for proof of each.

Prove that you completed both driver education and driver training.

On the test

How old must the licensed driver riding with a minor who is practicing be?

At least 25 years old. The whole point of the passenger is to grab the wheel, and they cannot do that from the back seat. California Driver’s Handbook, p.3: “Practice driving with a California-licensed driver who is at least 18 years old (25 for minors).”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
