Passing lanes and carpool lanes — California Permit Test

Passing lanes and carpool lanes on the California permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

On a multilane road the passing lane is the far left lane, closest to the center divider, and it is used to pass other vehicles.

Traffic in it is moving through rather than turning off, so it stays clear for the overtake.

On a multilane road, the passing lane (far left lane) is the lane closest to the center divider and is used to pass other vehicles.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.15

A high-occupancy vehicle lane is reserved for carpools, buses, motorcycles, or low-emission vehicles carrying a decal.

The lane is a reward for taking cars off the road, so it only works if the rest of us stay out.

An HOV lane is a special lane reserved for carpools, buses,

California Driver’s Handbook, p.15

Signs at the on-ramp or along the road give the minimum number of people a carpool lane needs, and the hours the rules apply.

The number is not the same everywhere, and neither are the hours, so the sign is the only answer.

There will be signs at the on-ramp or along the road to tell you the minimum number of people.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.16

A low emission or zero emission vehicle may use a carpool lane only while displaying a special DMV-issued decal.

The lane is checked at a glance from a patrol car, and the decal is what can be seen at speed.

You are driving a low emission or zero emission vehicle. You must display a special DMV-issued decal.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.16

The road surface in a carpool lane is marked with a diamond symbol and the words Carpool Lane.

Painting it on the road itself means you can still see it when a truck hides the sign.

The road surface in an HOV lane is marked with a diamond symbol and the words Carpool Lane.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.16

Do not cross over double solid lines to enter or leave a carpool lane; use the designated entrances and exits.

Cutting across at speed is a lane change into traffic moving much faster than you are.

Do not cross over double solid lines to enter or exit an HOV lane.

On the test

Where is the passing lane on a multilane road?

The far left lane by the divider. Traffic in it is moving through rather than turning off, so it stays clear for the overtake. California Driver’s Handbook, p.15: “On a multilane road, the passing lane (far left lane) is the lane closest to the center divider and is used to pass other vehicles.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
