Points on your record — California Permit Test
Points on your record on the California permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
If you are cited for a traffic violation you sign the ticket as a promise to appear in traffic court, and failing to appear may lead DMV to suspend your driving privilege until you do.
The signature is the promise, and breaking it costs you the license rather than the case.
If you are stopped by a law enforcement officer and cited (ticketed) for a traffic violation, you sign the ticket as a promise to appear in traffic court.
Traffic convictions and collisions stay on your driver’s record for 36 months or longer, depending on the type of conviction.
Three years is long enough that a bad month can still be on the record when you buy insurance.
Traffic convictions and collisions stay on your record for 36 months or longer, depending on the type of conviction.
An adult’s license may be suspended if their record shows 4 points in 12 months.
Four is not many. Two ordinary tickets and a collision reach it inside a year.
4 points in 12 months.
An adult’s license may be suspended if their record shows 6 points in 24 months.
The window widens as the count goes up, so a slow drift adds up the same way.
6 points in 24 months.
An adult’s license may be suspended if their record shows 8 points in 36 months.
Three years and eight points is the longest of the three windows and the highest count.
8 points in 36 months.
Each time you are convicted of a moving traffic violation the court notifies DMV and the conviction goes on your driver’s record, including convictions reported by other states and juvenile court.
A ticket in another state follows you home, because the courts tell DMV about it.
Each time you are convicted of a moving traffic violation, the court notifies DMV.
On the test
What does signing a traffic ticket mean?
You promise to appear in court. The signature is the promise, and breaking it costs you the license rather than the case. California Driver’s Handbook, p.53: “If you are stopped by a law enforcement officer and cited (ticketed) for a traffic violation, you sign the ticket as a promise to appear in traffic court.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
