Pre drive vehicle check — California Permit Test

Pre drive vehicle check on the California permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Before the drive test begins, the examiner asks you to locate and demonstrate the vehicle’s controls.

If you cannot find the wipers in a parking lot, you will not find them in the rain.

Before you begin, the DMV examiner will ask you to locate and demonstrate the following:

California Driver’s Handbook, p.6

The test vehicle must have at least two rearview mirrors, and one of them must be on the left side.

You cannot change lanes on what you cannot see, and the left side is where traffic comes past.

Rearview mirrors – At least two rearview mirrors. One of them must be on the left side of your vehicle.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.6

The tires on the test vehicle must have at least 1/32-inch of uniformed tread depth, and a donut tire may not be used.

Tread is what holds the car to a wet road, and a spare is not built for a test route.

Tires – The tires must have at least 1/32-inch of uniformed tread depth.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.6

There must be at least one inch of clearance between the bottom of the brake pedal and the floorboard when the brake is pressed.

A pedal that reaches the floor has nothing left to give when you need the rest of the stop.

Foot brake – There must be at least one inch of clearance between the bottom of the brake pedal and the floorboard when depressed.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.6

The horn must be designed for the vehicle, in working condition, and loud enough to be heard from at least 200 feet.

A horn nobody hears is not a warning, and warning somebody is the only job it has.

Horn – Designed for the vehicle, in proper working condition, and loud enough to be heard from a distance of at least 200 feet.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.6

The windshield must give a full, clear, unblocked view for both you and the examiner, and cracks may postpone the test.

A crack across the glass hides exactly the piece of road a small child walks out of.

Windshield – The windshield must allow a full, clear, unblocked view for you and the DMV examiner.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.6

All seat belts in the test vehicle must work properly and be worn by everyone in the vehicle.

A belt that jams is a belt nobody wears, and the examiner is riding in that seat too.

Seat belts – All seat belts must work properly and be used by the individual(s) in the vehicle.

California Driver’s Handbook, p.6

If the vehicle does not meet the requirements, the drive test is rescheduled.

The appointment is lost over a bulb or a mirror, which is a cheap thing to check the night before.

NOTE: If your vehicle does not meet the requirements, your drive test will be rescheduled.

On the test

What does the examiner ask you to do before the drive test starts?

Locate and demonstrate the vehicle’s controls. If you cannot find the wipers in a parking lot, you will not find them in the rain. California Driver’s Handbook, p.6: “Before you begin, the DMV examiner will ask you to locate and demonstrate the following:”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
