School and transit buses — Colorado Permit Test

School and transit buses on the Colorado permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

You must stop at least 20 feet before reaching a school bus stopped with its red lights flashing, and remain stopped until the lights stop flashing.

Children cross in front of and behind the bus where the driver cannot see them. Twenty feet is the space that keeps you out of that crossing.

You must stop your vehicle at least 20 feet before reaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing, and you must stop until the lights stop flashing.

Colorado Driver Handbook, p.11

You must stop for a school bus with its red lights flashing whether it is on your side of the road, the opposite side, or at an intersection you are approaching.

A child getting off crosses to whichever side home is on. Which side the bus is on tells you nothing about where they will walk.

You must stop whether it is on your side of the road, the opposite side of the road or at an intersection you are approaching.

Colorado Driver Handbook, p.11

You are not required to stop for a school bus if there is a median or other physical barrier separating the bus from your vehicle.

A barrier means no child can walk into your lane from the bus. Without one they can, which is why every other case requires the stop.

You are not required to stop if there is a median or other physical barrier separating the bus from your vehicle.

Colorado Driver Handbook, p.11

Watch carefully for children near a school bus and children crossing the roadway before proceeding.

The lights going off does not mean everyone is aboard. A child running late comes from wherever they were, at whatever speed they can manage.

Carefully watch for children near the school bus and children crossing the roadway before proceeding

Colorado Driver Handbook, p.11

You must remain stopped for a school bus until its flashing red lights are no longer flashing.

The lights go off when the driver can see every child is clear. Moving before that means moving while somebody is still in the road.

You must remain stopped until the flashing red lights are no longer flashing

Colorado Driver Handbook, p.11

You must yield to a transit bus that is signaling to enter a traffic lane when the yield sign on the rear of the bus is illuminated.

A bus pulling out needs a long gap and cannot accelerate into a short one. Letting it go costs you one bus length.

You must yield right-of-way to a transit bus if it is signaling to enter a traffic lane and the yield sign on the rear of the bus is illuminated

On the test

How far before a stopped school bus with red lights flashing must you stop?

20 feet. Children cross in front of and behind the bus where the driver cannot see them. Twenty feet is the space that keeps you out of that crossing. Colorado Driver Handbook, p.11: “You must stop your vehicle at least 20 feet before reaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing, and you must stop until the lights stop flashing.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
