Signaling — Colorado Permit Test
Signaling on the Colorado permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Failure to signal is a traffic violation, and you must signal before turning onto another roadway, into a parking lot, into another lane or when leaving a parked position.
Your signal is the only way anybody learns what you are about to do. Four situations are named because drivers forget the last two.
Before making any turn, whether onto another roadway, into a parking lot, into another lane of traffic, or leaving a parked position, it is extremely important that you signal
In urban areas you must signal continuously for 100 feet before making a turn or lane change.
A hundred feet is about six car lengths, which is enough for the driver behind to read it and act. Signaling as you turn is too late to help anyone.

On four lane highways where the posted speed limit is faster than 40 mph you must signal for 200 feet before making a turn or lane change.
At highway speed a hundred feet goes by in a second, so the warning has to start twice as far back to be worth anything.

A typical rule of thumb is to have your turn signal on for at least 3 seconds before making a turn or changing lanes.
Nobody can measure a hundred feet from the driver’s seat. Counting seconds is the version of the rule you can actually use.

If your vehicle turn signals do not work you must use hand signals, and you should end the hand signal before starting to turn so you can complete the turn with both hands on the wheel.
A broken signal does not excuse you from warning anybody. Getting the arm back inside before the turn is what keeps the car under control.
End your hand signal before starting to turn so that you can complete the turn with both hands on the wheel
On the test
When must you signal, besides turning onto another road?
When leaving a parked position. Your signal is the only way anybody learns what you are about to do. Four situations are named because drivers forget the last two. Colorado Driver Handbook, p.12: “Before making any turn, whether onto another roadway, into a parking lot, into another lane of traffic, or leaving a parked position, it is extremely important that you signal”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
