The drive test — Colorado Permit Test
The drive test on the Colorado permit test — 9 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
The drive test covers practical driving skills and is the part of licensing that shows you can drive safely.
The written test shows you know the rules. Only the drive test shows you can follow them while a real road is happening around you.
This test covers practical driving skills and abilities
Before a drive test the examiner checks the vehicle for safety, including brake lights, turn signals, seat belts, the windshield and tires.
A test drive in an unsafe car is dangerous for two people, not one. The check is quick, and failing it sends you home before you start.
Regardless of who provides the vehicle, the examiner will check the vehicle for safety including brake lights, turn signals, seat belts, the windshield and tires
Only the driver and the examiner are allowed in the vehicle during the drive test, so no interpreter, family member, friend or pet may ride along.
Anyone else in the car is a distraction and a second voice. The examiner needs to see what you do on your own, because that is how you will drive afterward.
For safety reasons, only the driver and the examiner are allowed in the vehicle during the test
Weapons must be removed from the vehicle before taking the drive test.
The examiner is a stranger getting into a car with you. A weapon in reach changes that ride for them, whatever you intended by it.
Remove weapons from your vehicle before taking the drive test
Electronic devices in the vehicle, including the radio and the cell phone, must be turned off for the drive test.
Sound you are used to is still sound that covers a siren or a horn. Off means off, so nothing rings or plays in the middle of a maneuver.
Turn off any electronic devices in your vehicle, including the radio and your cell phone
Objects must be removed from the dashboard and the rearview mirror before a drive test.
Anything hanging or sliding in front of you blocks part of the road you are meant to be watching. The examiner is checking what you can see.
Remove objects from the dashboard and the rearview mirror
A driver who fails the drive test must wait until the next business day before retaking it.
A second attempt an hour later repeats the same mistakes. A day is time to practice the thing that went wrong rather than hope it goes better.
If you fail the drive test, you must wait until the next business day before retaking the test
You may ask the examiner questions before the drive test begins, and after that unnecessary talking only interferes with the test.
Ask everything while the car is parked. Once you are moving, a conversation is one more thing pulling your eyes off the road.
You may ask the examiner questions before the test begins
You are scored during the entire drive test, not only during the named maneuvers.
Driving is not a set of tricks with gaps between them. What you do between the maneuvers is the part you will spend most of your life doing.
You will be scored during the entire test

How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
