Applicants 18 and older — Connecticut Permit Test

Applicants 18 and older on the Connecticut permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

An applicant 18 or older must hold a learner's permit for at least 90 days before taking a road test.

Being an adult shortens the wait but does not remove it. Ninety days of supervised driving still has to happen.

A person 18 years of age or older must obtain and hold a learner's permit for at least 90 days prior to taking a road test.

Connecticut Driver's Manual, p.7

An adult permit holder must be accompanied by a driving school instructor, a secondary school instructor, or a qualified trainer aged 20 or over with four or more consecutive years of unsuspended licensing.

An adult learner is still a learner. The person beside them has to clear the same bar a teen's trainer does.

The learner's permit holder must be under the instruction and while driving be accompanied by a commercial driving school instructor, secondary school instructor or a qualified trainer, who is a person 20 years of age or older who has held a license, which has not been suspended for four or more consecutive years prior to training.

Connecticut Driver's Manual, p.7

Every applicant 18 or older who has not held a license here or in another state must take the 8-hour safe driving course and bring the certificate of attendance.

The certificate is the proof. Sitting the course and arriving without the paper is the same as not sitting it.

All applicants 18 years of age or older who have not previously held a license in Connecticut or who do not hold a valid license issued by another state will be required to take an 8-hour course on safe driving practices and present a certificate showing proof of attending this course.

On the test

How long must an applicant aged 18 or over hold a permit before the road test?

At least 90 days. Being an adult shortens the wait but does not remove it. Ninety days of supervised driving still has to happen. Connecticut Driver's Manual, p.7: “A person 18 years of age or older must obtain and hold a learner's permit for at least 90 days prior to taking a road test.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
