Driver education 16 and 17 — Connecticut Permit Test
Driver education 16 and 17 on the Connecticut permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Every 16- and 17-year-old license applicant must finish a driver training program: a licensed commercial driving school, a secondary school program, or home training with the eight-hour safe driving course.
Three routes, one requirement. A teen who skips all three is not eligible for the road test at all.
All 16- and 17-year-old applicants for a driver's license must complete a driver training program through one of the following
A Connecticut commercial or secondary school course is 30 hours of classroom instruction and at least 40 hours of behind-the-wheel training on the road.
The classroom half teaches the rules and the road half teaches the car. The state counts both, in hours.
Classes offered through a Connecticut commercial or secondary school licensed and approved by DMV consist of 30 hours of classroom instruction and at least 40 hours of behind-the-wheel, on-the-road training for teens with a learner's permit.
The school issues a course completion certificate, form CS-1, and you need it to be eligible for the road test.
The road test appointment is refused without the paper. Finishing the course and proving it are two different steps.
After successful completion of the courses, the school will issue you a course completion certificate (form CS-1). This certificate is required in order for you to be eligible for the road test.
A teen who completes driver education at a commercial or secondary school must wait 120 days after the permit is issued before taking the road test.
The wait is there so practice happens across seasons and at night, not in one keen two weeks.
Applicants who successfully complete driver education through a commercial driving school or a secondary school must wait 120 days after the issuance of the learner's permit before taking the road test.
Every other applicant must wait 180 days after the permit is issued before taking the driver's exam.
Training at a school buys two months off the wait. Home training does not, and that is the trade the state is offering.
All other applicants must wait 180 days after the issuance of the learner's permit before taking the driver's exam.
On the test
What must every 16- and 17-year-old applicant complete before being licensed?
A driver training program from one of three approved routes. Three routes, one requirement. A teen who skips all three is not eligible for the road test at all. Connecticut Driver's Manual, p.6: “All 16- and 17-year-old applicants for a driver's license must complete a driver training program through one of the following”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
