Teen driving hours — District of Columbia Permit Test

Teen driving hours on the District of Columbia permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A learner permit holder may drive every day from 6:00am to 9:00pm, accompanied by a driver 21 years or older.

Late-night roads have more tired and drunk drivers and less light, which is the worst place for a beginner.

Learner Permit Must be accompanied by a driver 21 years or older Everyday, 6:00am – 9:00pm

DC Driver Manual, p.20

From September to June, a provisional license holder may drive Monday to Thursday from 6:01am to 10:59pm.

School nights end earlier because a tired teen driving home late is a crash waiting to happen.

Provisional License September – June Monday – Thursday, 6:01am – 10:59pm

DC Driver Manual, p.20

From September to June, a provisional license holder may drive Friday to Sunday from 6:01am to 11:59pm.

Weekends allow an extra hour, but the line still keeps a new driver off the road in the riskiest small hours.

Provisional License September – June Monday – Thursday, 6:01am – 10:59pm Friday – Sunday, 6:01am – 11:59pm

DC Driver Manual, p.20

In July and August, a provisional license holder may drive every day from 6:01am to 11:59pm.

With no school the next morning, summer nights get the later weekend limit every day of the week.

Provisional License September – June Monday – Thursday, 6:01am – 10:59pm Friday – Sunday, 6:01am – 11:59pm July & August Everyday, 6:01am – 11:59pm

DC Driver Manual, p.20

A full license with conditions held between the ages of 17 and 18 has the same restricted driving hours as the provisional license.

Moving up a stage before 18 does not end the late-night limits, because the risk at those hours has not gone away.

Full license with conditions between the ages of 17 – 18 years old September – June Monday – Thursday, 6:01am – 10:59pm

On the test

Until what time at night may a DC learner permit holder drive?

9:00 pm. Late-night roads have more tired and drunk drivers and less light, which is the worst place for a beginner. DC Driver Manual, p.20: “Learner Permit Must be accompanied by a driver 21 years or older Everyday, 6:00am – 9:00pm”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
