Getting a learners license — Florida Permit Test

Getting a learners license on the Florida permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

You must be at least 15 years old to get a Florida learner license.

Fifteen is the earliest the state will put anyone behind the wheel on a public road.

Be at least 15 years old.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.8

A learner license applicant must complete the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course before applying.

The course covers drinking and drugs, which is what kills new drivers first.

Completion of Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education Course (TLSAE)

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.8

A learner license applicant must pass the vision exam and the Class E Knowledge Exam, and a driver license applicant must also pass the Driving Skill exam.

A learner is tested on what they know. A licensed driver is tested on what they can do.

Pass Vision and Class E Knowledge exams.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.8

A driver under 18 must hold the learner license for 12 months, or until turning 18, whichever comes first.

A year of supervised driving covers every season, every road and every kind of weather.

Must hold a learner’s license for 12 months or until the 18th birthday, whichever comes first.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.8

An adult must certify that a driver under 18 has had at least 50 hours of driving experience, of which 10 hours were at night.

Night driving is where a new driver is weakest, so a share of the practice has to happen in the dark.

A parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult 21 years old or older, must certify that the driver has had at least 50 hours of driving experience, of which 10 hours were at night.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.8

A learner under 18 must have no moving traffic violation convictions for 12 months from the date the learner license was issued.

A clean year is the evidence the state accepts that a learner is ready to drive alone.

Must have NO moving traffic violation convictions for 12 months from learner’s license date of issue.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.8

A learner must always be accompanied by a licensed driver aged 21 or older, who rides in the closest seat to the right of the driver.

A supervisor in the back seat cannot reach the wheel or see what you are about to hit.

Always drive accompanied by a licensed driver, age 21+, who rides in the closest seat to the right of the driver.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.1

A driver under 18 must be in compliance with school attendance to hold a license.

Florida ties the license to school, so dropping out costs a teenager the car as well.

Must be in compliance with school attendance.

On the test

What is the youngest age at which a learner license can be issued?

15 years old. Fifteen is the earliest the state will put anyone behind the wheel on a public road. Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.8: “Be at least 15 years old.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
