Insurance you must carry — Florida Permit Test
Insurance you must carry on the Florida permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Florida requires a minimum of $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and a minimum of $10,000 in Property Damage Liability coverage.
Without it, the bill for a crash lands on whoever was hurt rather than on whoever caused it.
have a minimum of $10,000 in PIP AND a minimum of $10,000 in PDL coverage
Personal Injury Protection covers your own injuries whoever caused the crash; Property Damage Liability pays for the damage you caused to other people’s property.
They cover two different bills, and a driver who mixes them up buys the wrong policy.
PIP covers your injuries if you’re in a crash, no matter who caused it. PDL coverage pays for damage to other people’s property that you caused.
You must carry Florida insurance on a vehicle that has been in the state for 90 days, consecutive or not, during the last 365 days.
Three months in Florida makes the car a Florida car, even if it left in between.
You must comply if you own a motor vehicle that has been in the state for 90 days (consecutive or non-consecutive) during the last 365 days.
You must have the Florida Insurance ID Card, or electronic proof on a phone, with you whenever you are driving.
The officer at the window needs to see it now, not hear that it is at home in a drawer.
You must have the card (or electronic proof on a smart phone) with you when you’re driving.
Failing to provide proof of new insurance can suspend your driver license and license plate for up to three years.
Letting a policy lapse is quiet, and the suspension that follows is not.
If you fail to provide proof of new insurance, your driver license and license plate can be suspended for up to three years.
Once a license and plate have been suspended 30 days or more, a law enforcement officer can seize the license plate immediately.
After a month the state stops sending letters and starts taking the plate off the car.
If your driver license and license plate have been under suspension for 30 days or more, a law enforcement officer can seize your license plate immediately.
Driving with a suspended license is a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
A suspension is not a fine you can drive through: the next stop can end in a cell.
The officer may also take you to jail for driving with a suspended license, which is a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
On the test
What are Florida’s minimum PIP and PDL coverage amounts?
$10,000 in PIP and $10,000 in PDL. Without it, the bill for a crash lands on whoever was hurt rather than on whoever caused it. Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.23: “have a minimum of $10,000 in PIP AND a minimum of $10,000 in PDL coverage”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
