Motorcycle and moped riders — Florida Permit Test

Motorcycle and moped riders on the Florida permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

You must be 16 years of age or older to operate a motorcycle or a moped on a public road.

It is a year older than the learner license age, because there is nobody sitting beside you.

You must be 16 years of age or older to operate a motorcycle or moped on a public road.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.87

A rider under 18 must hold a learner license for 12 months with no moving violation convictions before a Motorcycle Only license is issued.

The same clean year the car license asks for, for the same reason.

If under 18, you must hold a learner’s license for 12 months with no moving violation convictions prior to the issuance of a Motorcycle Only license.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.87

A motorcycle operator must complete an approved motorcycle safety course and hold a motorcycle endorsement or a Motorcycle Only license, while a moped operator needs only a Class E driver license.

The bike needs a course and the moped does not, which is the difference between the two.

Operators of mopeds must have a Class E driver license. A motorcycle endorsement is not required.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.87

Motorcycle operators must wear a helmet unless they are 21 or older and carry a medical insurance policy providing at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries.

Being 21 is not enough on its own: the insurance is the other half of the exemption.

Operators of motorcycles must wear a helmet unless they are 21 or older AND carry a medical insurance policy providing for at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.87

Operators of motorcycles and mopeds do not have to carry Personal Injury Protection insurance.

Operators of motorcycles and mopeds do not have to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.87

On the test

What is the minimum age to ride a motorcycle or moped on a public road?

16 years old. It is a year older than the learner license age, because there is nobody sitting beside you. Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.87: “You must be 16 years of age or older to operate a motorcycle or moped on a public road.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
