Passing — Florida Permit Test

Passing on the Florida permit test — 11 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

You must return to the right side of the road before coming within 200 feet of any approaching vehicle.

Two hundred feet at closing speed is about two seconds, which is all the margin there is.

You must return to the right side of the road before coming within 200 feet of any approaching vehicle.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.67

You must signal before moving into the left lane to pass, and signal again when you are about to return to your lane.

Both halves of a pass are a lane change, and both take other drivers by surprise without a signal.

You must activate your signal before moving into the left lane to let others know that you are about to change lanes to pass.

Tap your horn by day, or flash your headlights at night, to let the other driver know you are passing.

The driver you are passing may be about to pull out for the same reason you are.

Tap your horn (day) or flash your headlights (night) to let the other driver know you are passing.

Do not return to the right side of the road until you can see the tires of the vehicle you passed in your rear-view mirror.

Seeing their tires means you are far enough ahead not to clip their front corner.

Do not return to the right side of the road until you can see the tires of the vehicle you passed in your rear-view mirror.

You must not pass on hills or curves where you cannot see at least 500 feet ahead.

Anything closer than 500 feet is arriving faster than you can get back into your lane.

You must not pass within 100 feet of an intersection, bridge, viaduct, tunnel or railroad crossing.

Each of these is somewhere another vehicle can appear from that you cannot see into.

within 100 feet of an intersection, bridge, viaduct, tunnel, or railroad crossing;

Do not pass more than one vehicle at a time, and do not exceed the speed limit while passing.

A pass that needs more than the speed limit is a pass that needed a longer gap.

Stay within the speed limit. It’s illegal to exceed the speed limit while passing.

You must not pass when a school bus is stopped with its warning flashers on and its stop sign extended, or at a crosswalk where a vehicle has stopped to let a pedestrian cross.

Both are visible from behind, which is the only view you have when you are deciding to pass.

When you are being passed, do not increase your speed: move to the right side of your lane to give the passing driver more room and a better view.

Speeding up strands them in the oncoming lane with nowhere left to go.

Do not increase your speed when you are being passed. Move to the right side of your lane to give passing drivers more room and a better view of the road ahead.

Passing on the right is only legal where there are two or more traffic lanes moving in the same direction, or where the vehicle you are passing is making a left turn.

Anywhere else, passing on the right puts you where nobody is looking for you.

Passing on the right is only legal when there are two or more traffic lanes moving in the same direction or the vehicle you are passing is making a left turn.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.67

Florida law says a driver must move out of the left lane when being overtaken from behind by a faster vehicle.

Holding the left lane makes the faster traffic pass on your right, which is the blind side.

Florida Law states that a driver must move out of the left lane when being overtaken from behind by another vehicle traveling at a faster speed.

On the test

How close to an approaching vehicle may you still be in the left lane?

No closer than 200 feet before returning. Two hundred feet at closing speed is about two seconds, which is all the margin there is. Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.67: “You must return to the right side of the road before coming within 200 feet of any approaching vehicle.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
