School zones and crossings — Florida Permit Test

School zones and crossings on the Florida permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Do not exceed the school zone speed limit during the times indicated on the sign or when the light is flashing.

The lower limit is timed to the walk to school, which is when children are in the road.

Begin School Zone. Do not exceed the school zone speed limit during indicated times or when light is flashing.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.57

An End School Zone sign marks the end of a reduced speed school zone.

Until you pass it, the lower limit and the doubled fines are both still running.

End School Zone. Marks the end of a reduced speed school zone.

At a School Crossing sign, slow down and watch for children crossing the road, stop if necessary, and obey signals from any crossing guards.

A child steps out expecting the car to stop, because that is what they have been taught.

School Crossing. Slow down and watch for children crossing the road. Stop if necessary. Obey signals from any crossing guards.

A School Bus Stop Ahead sign warns of a school bus stop that may be unexpected or hidden by a curve or a hill, so be prepared to stop.

The bus stop is somewhere you could not see it from, which is exactly why the sign is there.

School Bus Stop Ahead. Be prepared to stop. This sign is used to alert motorists of an upcoming school bus stop that may be unexpected or obscured by roadway geometry, such as a curve or hill.

When children or school crossing guards are present in a crosswalk, you must yield and stop at the stop line, not in the crosswalk.

Stopping in the crossing puts your car exactly where the children are walking.

When children or school crossing guards are present in a crosswalk, you must yield and stop at the stop line and not in the crosswalk.

On the test

When does the school zone speed limit apply?

At any time shown, and whenever the light flashes. The lower limit is timed to the walk to school, which is when children are in the road. Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.57: “Begin School Zone. Do not exceed the school zone speed limit during indicated times or when light is flashing.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
