Getting a license — Indiana Permit Test

Getting a license on the Indiana permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

With a BMV-licensed driver education course, you may apply for a driver's license at 16 years old.

Driver education gives you trained practice, so you may apply a little sooner than without it.

You must be at least 16 years old with completion of a BMV licensed driver education program

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.9

Without driver education, you must be at least 16 years and 270 days old to apply for a driver's license.

Without a course, the state asks you to wait longer and gain more practice before you drive alone.

You must be at least 16 years and 270 days of age without completion of a BMV licensed driver education program

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.9

A new driver must hold a valid Indiana learner's permit for at least 180 days before getting a license.

Six months of supervised driving lets you meet many kinds of roads, weather and traffic before you drive alone.

You must hold a valid (not expired, suspended, or revoked) Indiana learner’s permit for at least 180 days, or

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.9

Before getting a license, a new driver must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice.

Hours behind the wheel with a coach beside you are what build safe habits before you drive alone.

you must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice with:

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.9

At least 10 of the 50 supervised practice hours must be driven at night.

Night driving is harder to judge, so part of your practice must happen after dark with help beside you.

In both cases, at least 10 hours of supervised driving practice must be completed at night, unless you have a daytime-only restriction (restriction G) on your learner’s permit.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.9

An applicant under 18 must have the supervised driving log signed by a parent or legal guardian.

A parent's signature means an adult who knows the driver backs up the hours that were logged.

The log must be signed by a parent or legal guardian if the applicant is under 18 years of age.

On the test

How old must you be to apply for a license if you completed a BMV-licensed driver education program?

At least 16. Driver education gives you trained practice, so you may apply a little sooner than without it. Indiana Driver's Manual, p.9: “You must be at least 16 years old with completion of a BMV licensed driver education program”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
