Interstate driving — Indiana Permit Test

Interstate driving on the Indiana permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

When entering an interstate, stay right and speed up in the acceleration lane so you can merge when the path is clear.

Merging at highway speed lets you fit into a gap instead of forcing others to brake.

When you enter an interstate on-ramp, stay to the right and increase your speed in the acceleration lane to allow your vehicle to merge with traffic when your path is clear.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.46

Drivers entering an interstate must yield the right of way to vehicles already on it.

Traffic on the interstate is moving fast and cannot always move over for you.

However, drivers entering an interstate must yield the right of way to vehicles on the interstate.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.46

Only emergency and highway maintenance vehicles may make a U-turn across the median or crossover of an interstate.

Crossovers are for crews and police. A car turning there is in the path of fast traffic both ways.

It is illegal for any vehicle, other than an emergency vehicle or a highway maintenance vehicle, to make a U-turn by crossing the median or crossover of an interstate highway.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.46

Do not stop or park on the shoulder of an interstate except in an emergency or when your vehicle is disabled.

Parked cars on the shoulder are struck by drivers who drift or swerve.

Except in the event of an emergency or a disabled vehicle, do not stop or park a vehicle on the shoulder of an interstate highway.

Indiana Driver's Manual, p.46

On interstates with two lanes each way, trucks must use the right lane; with three or more, they are limited to the right two lanes.

Keeping trucks to the right leaves the left lane for passing and smooths traffic.

Trucks are restricted to the right lane on sections of interstate with two lanes in one direction and restricted to the right two lanes of interstate with three lanes or more in one direction.

On the test

How should you use the acceleration lane when entering an interstate?

Speed up to match traffic before merging. Merging at highway speed lets you fit into a gap instead of forcing others to brake. Indiana Driver's Manual, p.46: “When you enter an interstate on-ramp, stay to the right and increase your speed in the acceleration lane to allow your vehicle to merge with traffic when your path is clear.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
