Pedestrian signals — Indiana Permit Test
Pedestrian signals on the Indiana permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A pedestrian signal shows WALK or a walking person when it is safe to cross, and DON'T WALK or a raised hand when it is not.
Drivers who know the walk signal can expect people to step off the curb when it comes on.
Pedestrian signals display the words “DON’T WALK” or a symbol of a raised hand when it is not safe for pedestrians to cross a street or intersection.
A flashing DON'T WALK or raised hand warns that the time to cross safely is ending.
A person already in the street may still be finishing their crossing, so drivers must wait for them.
The words or symbols flash to alert pedestrians that the time in which to safely cross the street or intersection is ending.
A pedestrian hybrid beacon at a mid-block crosswalk stays dark until a pedestrian activates it.
When it is dark, drivers go as normal. When it lights, someone wants to cross.
The pedestrian hybrid beacon is dark unless it has been activated by a pedestrian.
After a pedestrian activates a hybrid beacon, it shows flashing yellow, then steady yellow, then two steady red lights while the pedestrian crosses.
The two steady reds are the drivers' stop signal, held while the person is in the crosswalk.
Then, two steady red lights will be displayed while the pedestrian crosses, and then the two red lights will flash to allow drivers to proceed through if the crossing is clear of pedestrians.
When a pedestrian hybrid beacon's two red lights flash, drivers may go through if the crossing is clear of pedestrians.
Flashing red here works like a stop sign: stop, check the crosswalk, then go.
and then the two red lights will flash to allow drivers to proceed through if the crossing is clear of pedestrians.
On the test
What does a raised hand on a pedestrian signal mean?
It is not safe to cross. Drivers who know the walk signal can expect people to step off the curb when it comes on. Indiana Driver's Manual, p.36: “Pedestrian signals display the words “DON’T WALK” or a symbol of a raised hand when it is not safe for pedestrians to cross a street or intersection.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
