Roundabouts — Indiana Permit Test
Roundabouts on the Indiana permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
In a roundabout, traffic enters and leaves only by right turns and moves counterclockwise.
Everyone going the same way around the circle removes head-on and broadside crashes.
A roundabout is a circular intersection in which traffic enters or exits only through right turns and proceeds in a counterclockwise direction.
When approaching a roundabout, incoming traffic always yields to traffic already circulating.
Cars in the circle have the right of way, so entering drivers wait for a gap.
When approaching a roundabout, incoming traffic always yields to the circulating traffic.
In a multi-lane roundabout, choose your lane before entering and do not change lanes inside it.
Changing lanes in the circle cuts across drivers heading for a different exit.
Drivers should not change lanes in the circulatory roadway.
In a multi-lane roundabout, yield the right of way to large vehicles going through, even slowing or stopping to let them pass.
A truck may need more than one lane to get around the circle.
When approaching or driving through a multi-lane roundabout, drivers must yield the right of way to large vehicles driving through the roundabout at the same time.
If two large trucks are in a roundabout at the same time, the truck in the right lane yields to the truck in the left lane.
Clear rules for big vehicles keep two trucks from squeezing each other in the circle.
If two large trucks are approaching or driving through a roundabout at the same time, the driver in the right lane must yield the right of way to the driver in the left lane.
Vehicles approaching a roundabout must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
The crosswalks sit at the entries, where drivers are looking left for traffic and may miss people on foot.
Approaching vehicles must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk and to traffic in the roundabout.
A traffic circle differs from a roundabout: it may have both clockwise and counterclockwise traffic, and its entries may be controlled by stop signs.
Do not assume every circle works like a roundabout. Read the signs at each one.
A traffic circle differs from a roundabout in that it may have clockwise and counterclockwise traffic.
On the test
Which way does traffic move in a roundabout?
Counterclockwise. Everyone going the same way around the circle removes head-on and broadside crashes. Indiana Driver's Manual, p.40: “A roundabout is a circular intersection in which traffic enters or exits only through right turns and proceeds in a counterclockwise direction.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
