Turning — Indiana Permit Test
Turning on the Indiana permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
To turn left, be in the far-left lane for your direction of travel, moving there well before the turn and signaling.
Getting into the right lane early lets other drivers see what you plan to do.
To turn left, be in the far-left lane for your direction of travel.
If your vehicle's turn signal lights are not working, you may use hand signals, but not on a driving skills exam.
Other drivers still need to know what you are about to do, even if a bulb is out.
If, however, one or more of these signals is malfunctioning, you may use hand signals.
A center lane marked for left turns is only for left-turning vehicles and must never be used for passing.
Drivers from both directions turn into that lane, so passing in it can mean a head-on crash.
Never use this type of center lane for passing other vehicles.
In a center left-turn lane, watch for vehicles from the opposite direction entering the same lane to turn in front of you.
Both directions share that lane, so someone may be coming toward you in it.
Always be aware that vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may be entering the center lane to turn left in front of your vehicle.
Never make a U-turn on a curve or when approaching the crest of a hill.
Cars coming around the curve or over the hill cannot see you turning across the road.
Never make a U-turn on a curve in the road or when approaching the crest of a hill or grade
Never make a U-turn on an interstate highway; go to the next exit and re-enter in the other direction.
Traffic on an interstate moves too fast for anyone to stop for a car turning across it.
Never make a U-turn on an interstate highway.
At a median U-turn intersection, a left turn is made by going through the intersection and making a U-turn at a median opening ahead.
Moving the left turn away from the main intersection removes the most dangerous crossing there.
These are known as median U-turn or J-turn intersections and signs are provided to guide drivers.
When following a driver who has signaled or slowed for a turn, slow down and be prepared to stop.
A turning car may stop suddenly for a pedestrian or oncoming traffic.
When following a driver who has signaled an intention to make a turn, or who has slowed down and may be planning to make a turn, you should slow down and be prepared to stop.
On the test
Which lane should you be in to turn left?
The far-left lane for your direction. Getting into the right lane early lets other drivers see what you plan to do. Indiana Driver's Manual, p.38: “To turn left, be in the far-left lane for your direction of travel.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
