Parking maneuvers — Kansas Permit Test

Parking maneuvers on the Kansas permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

When entering a Kansas perpendicular or angle parking space a driver positions the vehicle as far away from the parking space as possible as they approach.

Starting wide gives the car room to swing in. Hugging the spaces means clipping the car beside it.

as you approach, position the vehicle as far away from the parking space as possible.

Kansas Driving Handbook, p.53

When exiting a Kansas perpendicular or angle parking space a driver moves straight back until the front bumper clears the vehicle parked beside them, opposite the way they are turning.

Turning the wheel too early drags your front corner along the car beside you.

Continue to check traffic and move straight back until your front bumper clears the vehicle parked beside you, opposite of the way you are turning.

Kansas Driving Handbook, p.53

When entering a Kansas parallel parking space, if there is traffic coming from behind a driver stops parallel to the vehicle they are going to park behind and allows following vehicles to pass before parking.

Reversing with a car waiting behind rushes the whole maneuver. Letting them past removes the pressure.

If there is traffic coming from behind, stop parallel to the vehicle you are going to park behind and allow following vehicles to pass before parking.

Kansas Driving Handbook, p.54

When parallel parking in Kansas a driver continues backing until their front bumper is in line with the rear bumper of the vehicle they are parking behind.

That alignment is what makes the rest of the turn fit. Starting from the wrong place never recovers.

Continue backing until your front bumper is in line with the rear bumper of the vehicle you are parking behind.

Kansas Driving Handbook, p.54

When exiting a Kansas parallel parking space a driver moves forward into the appropriate lane of traffic when the door post of the vehicle clears the rear bumper of the vehicle parked ahead.

The door post is the reference that works from the driver's seat. Pulling out before it clears scrapes the car ahead.

Straighten wheels and move forward into the appropriate lane of traffic when the door post of the vehicle clears the rear bumper of the vehicle parked ahead of you.

On the test

How does a Kansas driver approach a perpendicular parking space?

Positioned as far from the space as possible. Starting wide gives the car room to swing in. Hugging the spaces means clipping the car beside it. Kansas Driving Handbook, p.53: “as you approach, position the vehicle as far away from the parking space as possible.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
