Public transportation — Kansas Permit Test
Public transportation on the Kansas permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Unlike a Kansas school bus, a driver does not have to stop for a transit bus when it drops off or picks up people, unless they are behind it.
A transit bus is not a school bus. Knowing the difference stops you blocking a whole street unnecessarily.
Unlike a school bus, you do not have to stop for a transit bus when they drop off or pick up people, unless you are behind them.
A Kansas safety zone is a space set aside for pedestrians boarding, entering and waiting for trolleys and light rail vehicles, and a driver may pass the zone as soon as it is safe and at no faster than 10 mph.
People are standing in the road there. Ten is slow enough to stop for someone who steps back.
You may pass the zone as soon as it is safe to do so and at no faster than 10 mph.
Where people are boarding or leaving a Kansas trolley or light rail vehicle and there is no safety zone, a driver stops behind the nearest door or vehicle platform and waits until the people have reached a safe place.
With no safety zone they step straight into the road. Stopping behind the door is what keeps them clear.
stop behind the nearest door or vehicle platform of the trolley or rail vehicle and wait until the people have reached a safe place.
A Kansas driver must not overtake and pass on the left of a trolley or light rail vehicle, whether moving or standing, except on a one-way street, where the tracks are too close to the right to pass, or when directed by a traffic officer.
Passing on the left crosses the tracks the trolley runs on. Passengers also step out on that side.

On the test
Must a Kansas driver stop for a transit bus loading passengers?
Not unless they are behind it. A transit bus is not a school bus. Knowing the difference stops you blocking a whole street unnecessarily. Kansas Driving Handbook, p.87: “Unlike a school bus, you do not have to stop for a transit bus when they drop off or pick up people, unless you are behind them.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
