Turns — Kansas Permit Test

Turns on the Kansas permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

For a right turn from a Kansas four-lane divided highway, enter the right lane well in advance of the turn and make a tight turn into the right lane of the cross street.

Swinging wide on a right turn takes you into oncoming traffic on the cross street. The tight line keeps you in your own lane.

Kansas Driving Handbook, p.17

For a Kansas left turn, move near the center line or traffic divider and turn from the inside lane so you do not swing wide and enter the cross street just to the right of the center line.

Cutting the corner puts you on the wrong side of the cross street. Landing right of the center line is what keeps the turn legal.

For left turns, move near the center line or traffic divider and turn from the inside lane in a way that you will not swing wide and will enter the cross street just to the right of the center line.

Kansas Driving Handbook, p.17

Some Kansas intersections are marked to permit turns from more than one lane, and a driver may make turns as indicated by signs or pavement markings.

The markings can override the usual single-lane rule. Reading them is what tells you which lanes may turn.

On the test

How does a Kansas driver make a right turn from a four-lane divided highway?

Enter the right lane early and turn tightly into the right lane. Swinging wide on a right turn takes you into oncoming traffic on the cross street. The tight line keeps you in your own lane. Kansas Driving Handbook, p.17: “In making a right turn from a four-lane divided highway, enter the right lane well in advance of the turn and make a tight turn into the right lane of the cross street.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
