Cornering basics — Louisiana Permit Test
Cornering basics on the Louisiana permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Every corner has three parts: the entry, the apex and the exit; the apex is where the car reaches the furthest point on the inside of the turn.
Knowing the parts of a turn helps you plan when to slow down, when to steer and when to speed up again.
The apex is the point where the car reaches the furthest point on the inside of the turn.
When cornering, look as far around the bend as possible; your eyes, not your hands, mainly steer the car.
The car goes where you look. Looking far ahead gives you more time to react to something in the road.
Look as far around the bend as possible.
Cornering force depends on speed squared, so doubling your speed makes 4 times the cornering force.
A little more speed in a curve asks a lot more grip from your tires, and they can lose hold of the road.
That means doubling the speed generates four times the cornering force.
Enter a bend a little on the slow side; entering too fast may cause a loss of control.
Slowing before the turn is far safer than braking in the middle of it.
The most efficient, smoothest way around a bend is to enter it a little on the slow side.
As you turn into a corner, ease off the gas; this shifts a little weight forward and helps the front tires grip.
More weight on the front tires presses them into the road, so the steering bites better.
Ease off the gas as you turn in.
Do not go over the center line when making a right turn; keep out wide to leave room for oncoming drivers who stray.
An oncoming driver may cut the curve, so staying on your side gives you a safety cushion.
Don’t go over the center line when making a right turn.
At the exit of a corner, gently add acceleration and start unwinding the steering.
Speeding up as the road straightens lets the car move smoothly from the turn back to going straight.
As you see the corner open up and some straight road ahead, add some acceleration (gently) and start unwinding the steering.
On the test
What is the apex of a corner?
The furthest point inside the turn. Knowing the parts of a turn helps you plan when to slow down, when to steer and when to speed up again. Class D & E Driver's Guide, p.50: “The apex is the point where the car reaches the furthest point on the inside of the turn.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
