License classes — Louisiana Permit Test
License classes on the Louisiana permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A Class E license lets you drive any single motor vehicle under 10,001 pounds, plus recreational vehicles and certain farm vehicles that are not commercial.
Most family cars, vans and pickups weigh far less than 10,001 pounds. That is why Class E is the license most new drivers get.
CLASS “E” - Permits the operation of any single motor vehicle under 10,001 pounds, recreational vehicles and certain farm use vehicles not defined as commercial vehicle.
A Class D license covers a single vehicle used in commerce with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more but less than 26,001 pounds.
A box truck used for work is heavier and harder to stop than a car. Class D proves you can handle that middle size.
CLASS “D” - Permits the operation of any single vehicle used in commerce having a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more but less than 26,001 pounds or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds’ gross vehicle weight rating, and not utilized for the transportation of hazardous materials.
With a Class D license you may drive a truck and trailer as long as their combined gross vehicle weight rating is less than 26,001 pounds.
A trailer adds a lot of weight behind a truck. Above this total you need a commercial license that tests you on heavy rigs.
NOTE: As long as the combined gross vehicle weight rating (truck and trailer) is less than 26,001 pounds, you can operate with Class “D”.
A Class D license also lets you drive the vehicles in the Class E category.
If you can handle a heavy work truck, you can handle a regular car too. So a Class D holder does not need a second license.
A class “D” allows for operation of those vehicles in the class “E” category.
A Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) is for use only when a student is enrolled in a driver education or pre-licensing course.
The TIP lets a student practice as part of a course. It is tied to that training, not a way to drive on your own.
TEMPORARY INSTRUCTION PERMIT (TIP) – For use only when a student is enrolled in a driver education or pre-licensing course.
On the test
Which license class covers an ordinary car that weighs under 10,001 pounds?
Class E. Most family cars, vans and pickups weigh far less than 10,001 pounds. That is why Class E is the license most new drivers get. Class D & E Driver's Guide, p.2: “CLASS “E” - Permits the operation of any single motor vehicle under 10,001 pounds, recreational vehicles and certain farm use vehicles not defined as commercial vehicle.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
