Pedestrian right of way — Louisiana Permit Test
Pedestrian right of way on the Louisiana permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Pedestrians have the right of way in a marked crosswalk, when crossing with a green light or walk signal, and over a car turning right on red.
People on foot have no protection. Giving them the right of way where they are meant to cross keeps them from being hit.
Pedestrians have the right of way when they are in a marked crosswalk, when crossing an intersection with a green traffic signal or walk signal, and over a vehicle making a right turn on red.
You must yield to pedestrians at all times, and stop for them even when they are jaywalking.
A person crossing in the wrong place is still a person. Being in the right does not undo hitting them.
You must yield to pedestrians at all times.
You should not pass a vehicle that is stopped at a crosswalk.
The stopped car may be letting someone cross, and it hides that person from you until it is too late.
You should not pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.
Pedestrians should walk facing traffic when possible.
Facing traffic, a walker can see a car drifting toward them and step out of the way.
Pedestrians should always walk facing traffic when possible and should never enter a roadway without checking for oncoming traffic.
Before crossing the street, look left, right and left again, and keep checking traffic while crossing.
The nearest lane of traffic comes from the left, so you check it again right before you step out.
Always look left, right and left again before crossing the street and continue to check traffic while crossing.
When you see people walking along a road or children playing near it, slow down.
Children dart into the street without looking. A slower car can stop in time.
When you see people walking or standing along a road, or children playing near a roadway, you should slow down.
On the test
You are turning right on red and a pedestrian is crossing. Who has the right of way?
The pedestrian crossing in front of you. People on foot have no protection. Giving them the right of way where they are meant to cross keeps them from being hit. Class D & E Driver's Guide, p.76: “Pedestrians have the right of way when they are in a marked crosswalk, when crossing an intersection with a green traffic signal or walk signal, and over a vehicle making a right turn on red.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
