Road skills test — Louisiana Permit Test
Road skills test on the Louisiana permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
For a road test at the OMV, your vehicle must be safe, pass a safety inspection, and have a valid inspection sticker, current plate and registration.
The examiner rides in your car. A car that is not safe or legal could hurt you both before the test even starts.
The vehicle must be in safe driving condition, pass a safety inspection, and have a valid inspection sticker, current license plate and registration document.
The speedometer of the vehicle used for the road test must work.
Without a working speedometer you cannot tell how fast you are going, so you cannot obey the speed limit.
NOTE: SPEEDOMETER MUST BE OPERATIONAL.
All vehicles made after 1964 must have working seat belts.
Seat belts keep you in your seat in a crash. Cars built after this year have them, and they must work for the test.
All vehicles manufactured after 1964 must be equipped with functional seat belts.
If you use your own car for the road test, you must show proof of liability insurance on it.
A new driver may make a mistake on the test. Insurance makes sure anyone hurt or any damage is covered.
In addition, you must present proof of liability insurance on the vehicle being used for the test.
Only the applicant, the OMV staffer, and an interpreter if needed may be in the vehicle during the road skills test.
Extra riders could coach you or distract you. The examiner needs to see your own driving with nothing else going on.
Only the applicant, the OMV staffer, and the interpreter (if applicable) are permitted in the vehicle during the road skills test.
Loose objects that could break or cause injury must be removed from the vehicle before the road test.
In a hard stop, loose things fly forward and can hit you or the examiner. Clearing them out keeps you both safe.
Loose objects that could break or cause injury must be removed from the vehicle prior to the road test.
You fail the road skills test if you break any traffic law, do anything dangerous, have a collision, refuse instructions, or pile up minor mistakes.
The test is meant to show you drive safely and legally. One unsafe or illegal act is enough to show you are not ready.
You will fail the skills test for any of the following:
A minor taking the road test must bring a custodial or domiciliary parent, tutor, or legal guardian, who shows ID, signs the application, and proves the test car is insured.
A parent or guardian has to agree to a teen's license and stand behind the car being insured.
NOTE: If you are a minor making application for a license, a custodial or domiciliary parent; tutor; or legal guardian must accompany you and present his identification, sign your application, and provide proof that the vehicle to be used for the road skills (driving) test is insured.
On the test
What must your vehicle have for an OMV road skills test?
A valid inspection sticker. The examiner rides in your car. A car that is not safe or legal could hurt you both before the test even starts. Class D & E Driver's Guide, p.9: “The vehicle must be in safe driving condition, pass a safety inspection, and have a valid inspection sticker, current license plate and registration document.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
