Stopped school bus — Louisiana Permit Test
Stopped school bus on the Louisiana permit test — 13 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
You must stop at least 30 feet from a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading children.
Children getting on or off may cross in front of the bus. Thirty feet gives them room and lets you see them.
You must stop at least thirty feet from a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading children.
School bus drivers turn on the flashing yellow lights at least 100 feet but no more than 500 feet before the bus stop.
The yellow lights are an early warning, so you have time to slow down before the bus stops.
Bus drivers will activate the flashing yellow lights of the bus at least 100 feet but no more than 500 feet before the school bus stop.
The flashing red lights and stop signs on a school bus come on as the bus comes to a complete stop.
Red lights and the stop arm mean the bus has stopped and children may be crossing right now.
As the bus comes to a complete stop, the flashing red lights and stop signs will activate.
On an undivided road, you must stop for a stopped school bus whether you are meeting it or traveling behind it.
A child may cross in front of the bus into the lane coming the other way, so both directions must stop.
This is required by law whether you are meeting the bus or traveling behind it.
After stopping for a school bus, wait for it to move and scan before you start driving again.
A child who was late or dropped something may still be near the bus after the arm folds.
Wait for the vehicle to move and scan before starting to drive again.
You do not have to stop when the bus is in a loading zone completely off the roadway where pedestrians may not cross the road.
When the bus is fully off the road and children cannot cross, no child will step in front of you.
You do not have to stop when the bus is stopped in a loading zone completely off the roadway and where the pedestrians are not allowed to cross the roadway.
Never pass a school bus with its red lights flashing, on the right or on the left.
Children walk around both sides of a stopped bus. Passing on either side can hit one.
Never pass a bus with its red lights flashing on the right or on the left.
When following a school bus, increase your following distance to get a better view.
A bus blocks what is ahead and stops often. More space lets you see the stop coming and brake in time.
If you are following a bus, increase your following distance in order to get a better view.
If a school bus is stopped in the opposite lanes of a road split by a ditch, grassy median, concrete barrier or other obstacle, you are not required to stop.
A median that cars cannot cross also keeps children from crossing to your side, so you may keep going with care.
When a school bus is stopped in opposite lanes on a roadway separated by a ditch, grassy median, elevated concrete barrier or any obstacle that prevents traffic from driving thereon, you are not required to stop.
On a 4-lane or 5-lane road split by a dedicated two-way left turn lane, drivers on the opposite side need not stop for a stopped school bus.
On a wide road with a center turn lane, the far side is treated like a separate road, so oncoming drivers keep moving with care.
Drivers on the opposites side of the roadway are also not required to stop for a stopped school bus when traveling on four lane or five lane roadways which are separated by a
On a 4-lane road with no barrier between the directions, drivers going both ways must stop for a stopped school bus.
Without a barrier, a child crossing can walk straight into the far lanes, so every driver must stop.
Drivers must stop on a four lane roadway when it is not separated by a barrier.
A road with one lane each way plus a dedicated two-way left turn lane is not a divided highway, so drivers must stop for the school bus.
A painted center lane is not a wall. Children can still cross it, so traffic both ways stops.
A roadway with one lane in each direction and with a dedicated two-way left turn lane is not considered a divided highway and drivers must stop for the school bus.
During the school year, school buses are most likely on the road in a 3-hour period each morning and each afternoon.
Knowing when buses run helps you expect sudden stops and children by the road at those times.
During the school year school buses are most likely to be on the road during a three-hour period in the morning and a three-hour period in the afternoon.
On the test
How far from a stopped school bus loading children must you stop?
At least 30 feet. Children getting on or off may cross in front of the bus. Thirty feet gives them room and lets you see them. Class D & E Driver's Guide, p.88: “You must stop at least thirty feet from a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading children.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
