Trailer towing safety — Louisiana Permit Test
Trailer towing safety on the Louisiana permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When hitching a trailer with a ball and coupler, the ball and coupler sizes must match to keep the trailer from separating.
A ball that is too small can let the trailer pop off at speed and roll into traffic.
It is important to make sure that the size of the ball and coupler match to prevent separation of the towed vehicle during transport.
Trailer safety chains should cross under the trailer tongue and have some slack for sharp turns, but must not drag on the road.
Crossed chains catch the tongue if the hitch lets go, so it does not dig into the road and flip.
When connected, safety chains should have some slack to permit sharp turns but should not drag on the road.
All trailers with a gross weight of 3,000 pounds or more must have brakes.
A heavy trailer can push your car forward when you stop, so it needs brakes of its own.
All trailers with a gross weight of 3,000 pounds or more are required to be equipped with brakes.
Trailer brakes must be designed to apply automatically if the trailer accidentally breaks away from the towing vehicle.
A runaway trailer with no driver needs to stop itself before it slams into someone.
said brakes shall be so designed and connected that in case of an accidental breakaway of the towed vehicle the brakes shall be automatically applied.
Always make sure the lights on your trailer work properly before towing.
Drivers behind you rely on the trailer's lights to know when you stop or turn.
Always make sure the lights on your trailer are functioning properly before towing.
All trailer tires should be the same type, size and construction; do not mix bias-belted and radial tires.
Mixed tires grip and flex in different ways, which can make the trailer sway or pull to one side.
All your trailer tires should be the same type, size, and construction; do not mix bias-belted and radial tires.
On the test
Why must the hitch ball and coupler be the same size?
To prevent the trailer from separating. A ball that is too small can let the trailer pop off at speed and roll into traffic. Class D & E Driver's Guide, p.133: “It is important to make sure that the size of the ball and coupler match to prevent separation of the towed vehicle during transport.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
