White lane markings — Louisiana Permit Test
White lane markings on the Louisiana permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
White lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.
A white line tells you the car in the next lane is going your way, not coming at you.
White lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.
Louisiana law says vehicles should travel in the right hand lane unless turning left, passing, or the right lanes are congested.
Keeping right leaves the left lane open for passing, so fast cars do not weave around you.
Louisiana law states that all vehicles should travel in the right hand lane unless, preparing for a left turn, passing another vehicle or when right hand lanes are congested.
A vehicle in the left hand lane may not drive slower than vehicles traveling to its right.
A slow car in the left lane forces others to pass on the right, where drivers do not expect them.
No vehicle driven in the left hand lane shall be driven at speeds slower than vehicles traveling to its right.
A single solid white line means moving from lane to lane is hazardous; the wider the line, the greater the hazard.
Solid lines are painted where a lane change is risky, like near an exit, so a thick one is a strong warning.
The wider the line, the greater the hazard.
Single dashed white lane lines may be crossed only when you can do so safely.
A dashed line allows a lane change, but the car beside you still has to be clear first.
Single Dashed White Lane Lines may be crossed only when you can do so safely.
White edge lines run along the right edge of the roadway; yellow edge lines may run along the left edge of divided roads.
Edge lines show where the road ends at night or in rain, so you do not drift onto the shoulder.
White edge lines are used along the right edge of the roadway.
Crossing a double solid white line between two lanes going the same direction is prohibited.
Double white lines are used where a lane change is too dangerous, often on interstates.
Crossing a double solid line is prohibited.
On the test
What do white lane lines separate?
Lanes going the same way. A white line tells you the car in the next lane is going your way, not coming at you. Class D & E Driver's Guide, p.35: “White lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
