The rules

Maintain a following distance of at least 3 to 4 seconds behind the vehicle ahead under good conditions.

Three seconds is roughly the time to notice, decide and brake; anything less and you are relying on the car ahead not stopping hard.

Increase your following distance in rain, fog, snow, or ice, at night, and when following motorcycles, bicycles, or large trucks.

Rain, darkness and a load ahead of you all lengthen the time before you can stop, so the gap has to grow with them.

Following another vehicle too closely (tailgating) is a traffic violation and a leading cause of rear-end crashes.

Tailgating removes your reaction time entirely — the crash happens before you can respond.
