Penalties — Maryland Permit Test

Penalties on the Maryland permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

For a driver under 18 with a provisional license, a first moving violation conviction requires completing a driver improvement program.

The first response is a course, not a suspension.

A second moving violation for a provisional driver under 18 brings a 30-day suspension of the license.

The second time is not a mistake, so the response stops being a course.

A third moving violation for a provisional driver under 18 brings a 180-day suspension, attendance at a driver improvement program for young drivers, and a 180-day work and education only restriction.

By the third time the license is gone for half a year.

A fourth or later moving violation for a provisional driver under 18 results in the license being revoked, and you must pass all licensing tests again to get it back.

There is nothing left to suspend, so the process starts over.

After each conviction or probation before judgment for a moving violation, a provisional driver must begin a new 18-month conviction-free period before getting a full license.

The clock restarts, so one violation costs far more than the penalty attached to it.

For an adult provisional license holder, a third or later moving violation results in up to a 180-day suspension or revocation of the license.

At the top of the adult scale the outcome stops being a fixed period and becomes the license itself.

On the test

What follows a first moving violation for a provisional driver under 18?

A driver improvement program. The first response is a course, not a suspension.

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
