The rules
Accumulating 3 to 4 points within 2 years results in a warning letter from the MVA.
The warning is deliberately early, while a driver still has room to change their habits without losing anything.
Accumulating 5 to 7 points within 2 years requires completion of a Driver Improvement Program.
At this level the pattern is no longer an accident, so the response is retraining rather than a letter.
Accumulating 8 to 11 points within 2 years results in license suspension.
Suspension puts the license back within reach once the driver has served it, which is what separates it from revocation.
Accumulating 12 or more points within 2 years results in license revocation.
Twelve points in two years is a driver whose record shows the risk is not going to stop on its own.
Points are counted against the driving record for 2 years from the violation date.
Two years is long enough to show a pattern and short enough that an old mistake stops counting.
