The rules

In rain, snow, or ice, reduce speed, brake gently and early, and increase your following distance.

Wet and icy roads lengthen everything — stopping, steering, reacting — so speed and following distance both have to come down.

Bridges and overpasses freeze before other road surfaces and may be icy when the rest of the road is not.

A bridge has cold air moving under it as well as over it, while an ordinary road is warmed from beneath by the ground — so the bridge loses its heat first.
