Provisional license restrictions — Minnesota Permit Test
Provisional license restrictions on the Minnesota permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
For the first six months a provisional driver must not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
Those five hours hold the worst mix of tired drivers and empty roads. A beginner meets them last.
During the first six months, you must not drive from midnight to 5 a.m. unless you are: – Accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 25 years old. – Driving between home and work. – Driving between home and a school event for which the school does not provide transportation. – Driving for employment purposes.
A provisional driver may drive after midnight when accompanied by a licensed driver at least 25 years old.
The hours are not banned outright. An experienced adult in the car is what makes them allowed.
Accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 25 years old.
A provisional driver may drive after midnight between home and work, or for employment purposes.
A shift that ends at one in the morning is not a night out. The exception is for the drive home from it.
Driving between home and work.
In the first six months a provisional driver may carry only one passenger under 20 unless a parent or guardian is along.
Teen passengers are the biggest distraction a teen driver has. One at a time is the limit at first.
During the first six months, you may have only one passenger under 20 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
In the second six months a provisional driver may carry no more than three passengers under 20.
The limit loosens as experience builds, rather than disappearing on the day the first six months end.
During the second six months, you may have no more than three passengers under 20 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Immediate family members under 20 may ride with a provisional driver during both passenger-limit periods.
Driving a younger brother to school is the trip the family needs most. It is carved out of the limit.
You may have immediate family members under age 20 as passengers during both time periods.
On the test
Which hours are closed to a provisional driver in their first six months?
Midnight to 5 a.m.. Those five hours hold the worst mix of tired drivers and empty roads. A beginner meets them last. Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.16: “During the first six months, you must not drive from midnight to 5 a.m. unless you are: – Accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 25 years old. – Driving between home and work. – Driving between home and a school event for which the school does not provide transportation. – Driving for employment purposes.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
