Recent Minnesota law changes — Minnesota Permit Test
Recent Minnesota law changes on the Minnesota permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
An electric-assist bicycle is not a moped, and you must be at least 15 years old to ride one.
The motor only helps you pedal, so the state treats the bike as a bike. The age floor is the one rule it keeps.
Electric-assist bicycles are not mopeds, so you can ride them on most bike trails. However, you need to be at least 15 years old to ride one.
You can get a standard driver’s license, learner’s permit or state ID whatever your immigration status.
A driver who can be tested and insured is safer for everyone than one who drives anyway. The law drops the proof of legal presence.
Starting Oct. 1, 2023, you can get your card, no matter your immigration status.
A reintegration license lets someone leaving prison drive again, and it expires 15 months after it is issued.
The license is a bridge back to work, not a permanent card. Break traffic laws with it and the state takes it back.
The license expires 15 months after it is issued and is canceled if you break traffic laws and lose driving privileges.
Showing proof of U.S. citizenship with a license or ID application registers you to vote automatically.
One counter visit now does two jobs. If you would rather not be on the roll, you opt out with the Secretary of State.
if you provide proof that you are a U.S. citizen (like a U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate or certificate of citizenship) when applying for or renewing a driver’s license or identification card, you will be automatically registered to vote
Start the online pre-application no more than 30 days before you visit a driver’s license office.
The office pulls your answers up at the counter. Start too early and the form goes stale, so you fill one in by hand instead.
Start your application online using the pre-application feature no more than 30 days before visiting a driver’s license office to avoid completing a paper application.
On the test
How old must a rider be to ride an electric-assist bicycle in Minnesota?
At least 15 years old. The motor only helps you pedal, so the state treats the bike as a bike. The age floor is the one rule it keeps. Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.1: “Electric-assist bicycles are not mopeds, so you can ride them on most bike trails. However, you need to be at least 15 years old to ride one.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
