Where parking is forbidden — Minnesota Permit Test

Where parking is forbidden on the Minnesota permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

You may not park within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.

A car parked at the corner hides a person stepping off the curb until the moment they are in front of you.

Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection

Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.35

You may not park within 30 feet of a flashing light, stop sign or traffic control signal at the side of a road.

A parked car in front of a stop sign takes the sign away from everyone approaching it.

Within 30 feet of any flashing light, stop sign or traffic control signal on the side of a public road

Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.35

You may not park within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing.

A train overhangs the rails by several feet, and it cannot steer around anything.

Within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing

Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.35

You may not park within 10 feet of a fire hydrant.

A fire crew needs to get a hose onto the hydrant without breaking a window to reach it.

Within 10 feet of a fire hydrant

Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.35

You may not park on a crosswalk or sidewalk, within an intersection, on any bridge or in a highway tunnel.

Each of those is a place with no room to spare, where a stopped car forces somebody into traffic.

On any bridge

Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.35

Double parking, which is stopping on the traffic side of a vehicle already parked at the curb, is not allowed.

The second car blocks a whole lane and hides the first one’s door as it opens.

On the traffic side of any vehicle parked at a curb or at the edge of a highway. This is known as “double parking”

Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.35

You may not park beside a curb painted yellow or where official “No Parking” signs are posted.

The paint and the sign are the same instruction, and the reason for it is usually out of sight.

Beside a curb that is painted yellow or where official “No Parking” signs are posted

Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.35

On the test

How far from a crosswalk at an intersection must you park?

At least 20 feet away. A car parked at the corner hides a person stepping off the curb until the moment they are in front of you. Minnesota Driver’s Manual, p.35: “Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
