Child restraints — Missouri Permit Test

Child restraints on the Missouri permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A child less than four years old must be secured in a child passenger restraint system, regardless of weight.

Under four, weight does not enter into it. The seat is required whatever the child weighs.

Children less than four years old, regardless of weight, shall be secured in a child passenger restraint system appropriate for that child.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.55

A child weighing less than 40 pounds must be secured in a child passenger restraint system, regardless of age.

Under forty pounds, age does not enter into it. A small six-year-old needs the seat as much as a toddler.

Children weighing less than 40 pounds, regardless of age, shall be secured in a child passenger restraint system appropriate for that child.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.55

A child at least four but under eight, weighing at least 40 but less than 80 pounds and under four feet nine inches tall, must be in a child restraint or booster seat.

Three conditions have to hold together. Miss any one of them and a different rule applies.

Children at least four years of age but less than eight years of age, who also weigh at least 40 pounds but less than 80 pounds, and are also less than 4’9” tall shall be secured in a child passenger restraint system or booster seat appropriate for that child.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.56

A child at least eight years old, or at least 80 pounds, or more than four feet nine inches tall, must be secured by a vehicle safety belt or a booster seat.

Passing any one of the three thresholds moves the child to a belt. It is not all three together.

Children at least eight years old, at least 80 pounds or children more than 4’9” tall shall be secured by a vehicle safety belt or booster seat appropriate for that child.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.56

The child restraint law applies in any motor vehicle other than a public carrier for hire or a school bus.

Two exceptions and no more. A taxi and a bus are different, and a family car never is.

On the test

What does Missouri require for a child less than four years old?

A child passenger restraint system, regardless of weight. Under four, weight does not enter into it. The seat is required whatever the child weighs. Missouri Driver Guide, p.55: “Children less than four years old, regardless of weight, shall be secured in a child passenger restraint system appropriate for that child.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
