Left turn lanes — Missouri Permit Test

Left turn lanes on the Missouri permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Where a street has more than one left-turn lane, a driver turning from the left-hand turn lane enters the left lane on the right of the yellow dividing line, and a driver turning from the right-hand turn lane enters the right lane.

Two cars turn side by side and must stay side by side. Drifting across is how they meet in the middle.

If you are turning from the right side, left-turn lane, enter the right lane.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.26

Enter a two-way left-turn lane only when you are preparing to slow or stop before turning left from the main roadway.

The center lane is a place to wait, not a place to travel. Cars enter it from both directions.

Only enter this lane when preparing to slow down or stop before making a left turn from the main roadway.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.26

A vehicle may not travel in a two-way left-turn lane for more than 500 feet.

Five hundred feet is about the length of one long block. Beyond that you are using it as a lane, which is what it is not.

a vehicle may not travel in this lane for more than 500 feet

Missouri Driver Guide, p.26

Do not use a two-way left-turn lane when entering the roadway from a side street.

Arriving into the middle lane puts you head-on with someone waiting to turn the other way.

do not use this lane when entering the roadway from a side street

Missouri Driver Guide, p.26

Vehicles moving in both directions may use a shared center lane for left turns, and you should turn from it as soon as your path is clear.

Every second you sit there is a second somebody coming the other way needs the same lane.

Turn from this lane as soon as your path is clear.

On the test

You are turning from the right-hand of two left-turn lanes. Which lane do you enter?

The right lane. Two cars turn side by side and must stay side by side. Drifting across is how they meet in the middle. Missouri Driver Guide, p.26: “If you are turning from the right side, left-turn lane, enter the right lane.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
