Passing on the right — Missouri Permit Test
Passing on the right on the Missouri permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
You may pass on the right when the vehicle you are overtaking is making or about to make a left turn.
A car waiting to turn left has stopped in the middle of the road. Passing it on the right is the only way past.
only under the following conditions: • When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn;
A driver may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only under the conditions Missouri law lists.
Passing on the right is the exception, not a second option. Everything outside the list is simply not allowed.
The driver of a motor vehicle may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions
You may pass on the right on a city street with unobstructed pavement wide enough for two or more lines of vehicles in each direction.
Where the road already carries two lines each way, passing on the right is just using the lane that is there.
only under the following conditions: • When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn; • Upon a city street with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of vehicles in each direction;
Passing on the right is never allowed by driving off the paved or main traveled portion of the roadway.
The shoulder is not a lane. A driver pulling over onto it does not expect to find you already there.
In no event shall such movement be made by driving off the paved or main traveled portion of the roadway (shoulder).
You may pass on the right on a one-way street.
On a one-way street every lane runs the same way, so there is no oncoming traffic for the maneuver to threaten.

When does Missouri allow passing on the right?
When the vehicle ahead is making or about to make a left turn. A car waiting to turn left has stopped in the middle of the road. Passing it on the right is the only way past. Missouri Driver Guide, p.22: “only under the following conditions: • When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn;”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
