Emergency vehicles — Mississippi Permit Test
Emergency vehicles on the Mississippi permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
An ambulance, fire engine or police car flashing red or blue lights or sounding a bell or siren always has the right of way; pull to the extreme right shoulder until it has passed, if possible.
An emergency driver racing to a call needs a clear lane, and seconds can save a life.
If possible, pull your vehicle over to the extreme right shoulder of the road until the emergency vehicle has passed.
If you are at an intersection when an emergency vehicle comes, proceed through the intersection, then pull over to the extreme right shoulder.
Stopping inside the intersection can block the very path the emergency vehicle needs.
If you are at an intersection, proceed through the intersection, and pull over to the extreme right shoulder.
If an emergency vehicle with lights or siren on is parked along a four-lane highway, merge into the lane away from it if it is safe to do so.
Officers and crews work just feet from passing traffic, and one drifting car can kill them.
If an emergency vehicle with lights or siren activated is parked along the side of a four-lane highway, merge into the lane away from the emergency vehicle if it is safe to do so.
If merging away from a parked emergency vehicle is not safe, slow down and prepare to stop if necessary.
Forcing a lane change into traffic just trades one crash risk for another.
If merging into an adjacent lane is not safe, slow down and prepare to stop if necessary.
On the test
A police car with its siren on comes up behind you. What should you do?
Pull to the extreme right shoulder. An emergency driver racing to a call needs a clear lane, and seconds can save a life. Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p.67: “If possible, pull your vehicle over to the extreme right shoulder of the road until the emergency vehicle has passed.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
