Left turn steps — Mississippi Permit Test
Left turn steps on the Mississippi permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Well ahead of a left turn, check for traffic, signal the lane change, and move safely into the left lane.
Waiting until the corner to move left means cutting across cars that are already close.
STEP 1: Well ahead of turn, check for traffic and move safely into the left lane. Use your signal to indicate you are changing lanes.
While waiting to turn left, keep close to the center line.
Holding close to the center line lets cars going straight get past you on the right.
STEP 3: Keep close to the center line and keep your wheels straight while waiting to turn.
When travel is permitted, look both ways and enter the intersection just to the right of center, without cutting the corner.
Cutting the corner puts you in the lane of cars waiting to come out of the street you are turning into.
STEP 4: Obey any traffic signal or sign. When travel is permitted, look both ways before entering intersection. Then enter just to the right of center.
After a left turn, do not swing into the right lane; return to the right lane only when it is safe.
Swinging wide into the far lane can hit a car turning right into that same street.
DO NOT SWING INTO RIGHT LANE.
On the test
What is the first step in making a left turn?
Well ahead, move safely into the left lane. Waiting until the corner to move left means cutting across cars that are already close. Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p.51: “STEP 1: Well ahead of turn, check for traffic and move safely into the left lane. Use your signal to indicate you are changing lanes.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
