Passing on the right — Mississippi Permit Test

Passing on the right on the Mississippi permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

You may pass on the right when the vehicle you are passing is making or about to make a left turn.

A car stopped to turn left blocks the lane, and going around it on the right keeps traffic moving.

When the vehicle you are passing is making or is about to make a left turn.

Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p.47

You may pass on the right on a four-lane highway of adequate width with no obstructions or parked cars.

Parked cars and other things in the right lane leave no room to get by safely.

On a four-lane highway of adequate width where there are no obstructions or parked cars.

Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p.47

You may pass on the right on any one-way highway of adequate width.

On a one-way road no traffic comes at you, so a wide road leaves room on either side.

On any one-way highway of adequate width.

Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p.47

You may never drive off the pavement or onto the shoulder to pass.

The shoulder may hide gravel, a ditch, or a stopped car, and drivers on the road do not expect you there.

Under no circumstances are you allowed to drive off the pavement or on the shoulder to pass.

On the test

When may you pass another vehicle on the right?

When it is turning left. A car stopped to turn left blocks the lane, and going around it on the right keeps traffic moving. Mississippi Driver's License Manual, p.47: “When the vehicle you are passing is making or is about to make a left turn.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
