Night driving speed and lights — Montana Permit Test
Night driving speed and lights on the Montana permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Because vision is reduced at night, slow down, and take into account the road, the car and the weather as well as the speed limit.
Headlights show only a short stretch of road, and at day speeds you can outrun what they light up.
Because vision is reduced at night, drivers cannot see as well at night, so SLOW DOWN.
Never drive with only your parking lights on; oncoming traffic may think you are stopped. Parking lights are for parked cars only.
A car moving with just its small lights looks parked, so another driver may pull out right in front of it.
NEVER drive with your parking lights, as oncoming traffic may think that you are stopped.
If you stop at night with mechanical trouble, move right out of the traffic lane and leave your parking lights on, with headlights dimmed if they are on.
A dark car stopped beside the road at night is invisible until a driver is right on top of it.
If at night, be sure to leave your parking lights on and if your headlights are on, make sure that they are dimmed.
On the test
Why should you slow down when driving at night?
Your vision is reduced at night. Headlights show only a short stretch of road, and at day speeds you can outrun what they light up. Montana Driver Manual, p.55: “Because vision is reduced at night, drivers cannot see as well at night, so SLOW DOWN.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
