The driver and all passengers in a vehicle made with seat belts must have a seat belt properly fastened at all times when the vehicle is in forward motion on a street or highway. If charged with DWI you will be asked to take a chemical test of your breath or blood; refusing any required test brings an immediate revocation of at least 30 days plus a minimum 12-month revocation by the DMV. Refusing the test does not avoid the penalty. It brings a longer one than many convictions do.

Signal at least the last 100 feet before turning or stopping, and at least the last 200 feet where the speed limit is 45 mph or more; flashing signals are a legal substitute for hand signals and are easier to see at night. At 45 mph a car covers 100 feet in a second and a half. The faster the road, the earlier the warning has to come.

May you turn right on a red light?

A steady red circular signal means stop; unless a sign says NO TURN ON RED, you may turn right after coming to a complete stop and yielding to traffic and pedestrians. The right turn on red is allowed because it crosses nobody’s green. The stop first is what makes that true.

Unless there is a sign indicating “NO TURN ON RED,” a right turn can be made after coming to a complete stop.

Who must ride with you when you drive on a learner's permit?

What hours may a provisional driver not drive?

A Level Two driver may drive unsupervised from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m., and at any time when driving directly to or from work or a volunteer fire, rescue or EMS service they belong to. The limit keeps a new solo driver off the late-night roads. Work and emergency service are the trips the law lets through.

You may drive without supervision from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m. and at any time when driving directly to or from work or any volunteer fire, rescue or emergency medical service, if you are a member.

What is the penalty for littering from a vehicle?

When litter is thrown or blown from a vehicle, the driver is held responsible; a first conviction carries a fine of at least $250 and up to $1,000, and a second within three years $500 to $2,000. The fine is large because roadside litter is a hazard, not an eyesore. It draws animals to the road and costs the state to clear.

If convicted, the minimum fine is $250, and the maximum fine is $1,000.

How long is your license suspended for a first drunk-driving conviction?

When must you install an ignition interlock after a drunk-driving conviction?

A DWI conviction with a BAC of 0.15 or more, or another DWI conviction within the past seven years, requires an ignition interlock device on the vehicle. An interlock makes the car refuse to start for a drinker. It is ordered where the record says a promise is not enough.

Furthermore, a conviction of Driving While Impaired with a BAC of 0.15 or more, or another conviction within the past seven years, will require an ignition interlock device to be installed on the vehicle.

Ask a question about North Carolina road law

Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from North Carolina Driver Handbook or North Carolina’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.
