Insurance — Ohio Permit Test

Insurance on the Ohio permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

It is illegal in Ohio to drive without insurance, and illegal for an owner to let anyone else drive their vehicle without it.

The offense reaches the owner as well as the driver, so lending the car lends the liability.

In Ohio, it is illegal to drive any motor vehicle without insurance, and it is illegal for a vehicle owner to allow anyone else to drive his or her motor vehicle without insurance.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.31

Ohio's minimum liability cover is twenty-five thousand dollars for injury or death of one person, fifty thousand for two or more, and twenty-five thousand for property damage.

They are minimums, and a single serious crash passes them easily.

Minimum liability insurance requirements are: $25,000 for injury/death of one person, and $50,000 for injury/death of two or more people, and $25,000 for property damage in an accident;

Proof of insurance must be shown when a ticket is issued, at vehicle inspection stops, at traffic court, when a crash causes more than four hundred dollars of property damage, and when the BMV asks.

Four hundred dollars is a low bar, which is why the proof is asked for so often.

When either the driver or vehicle owner is involved in a traffic crash that results in more than $400 in property damage.

On the test

Who commits an offense when an uninsured vehicle is driven?

Both the driver and the owner. The offense reaches the owner as well as the driver, so lending the car lends the liability. Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.31: “In Ohio, it is illegal to drive any motor vehicle without insurance, and it is illegal for a vehicle owner to allow anyone else to drive his or her motor vehicle without insurance.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
