Large vehicles — Ohio Permit Test

Large vehicles on the Ohio permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A truck or bus may swing into the left lane to make a wide right turn, and a driver must not squeeze between the large vehicle and the curb.

The gap that opens beside a turning truck is the gap the trailer is about to fill.

Trucks or buses may make a wide right turn from the left lane to clear the corner of a curb or other obstruction.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.42

If a driver cannot see a truck driver's face in that truck's side mirror, the truck driver cannot see them either.

It is a test you can run from your own seat, and the answer is immediate.

If you cannot see the driver's face in the side-view mirror, the driver cannot see you.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.43

A loaded truck in good condition traveling at fifty-five miles per hour needs at least three hundred and thirty-five feet to stop, more than one and a half times a car's stopping distance.

Cutting in front of one takes away the distance it needs and cannot get back.

A loaded truck with good tires and properly adjusted brakes, under ideal conditions, traveling at 55 mph requires a minimum of 335 feet before coming to a complete stop, or greater than 1½ times the stopping distance of a passenger vehicle.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.43

A large vehicle has a blind spot directly behind it extending up to two hundred feet, so a driver following too closely cannot be seen and cannot see ahead either.

The No Zone is on all four sides, and the rear one is the longest.

Unlike passenger vehicles, large vehicles have huge blind spots directly behind them that extend up to 200 feet.

On the test

A truck ahead swings left before turning right. What should you do?

Stay back; do not move up between the truck and the curb. The gap that opens beside a turning truck is the gap the trailer is about to fill. Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.42: “Trucks or buses may make a wide right turn from the left lane to clear the corner of a curb or other obstruction.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
