Tire safety — Ohio Permit Test

Tire safety on the Ohio permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Tires should be kept at the pressure the vehicle's manufacturer recommends, which is given in PSI on the door jamb rather than on the tire itself.

The number molded into the tire is its maximum, not the pressure your car was designed around.

Maintain the tires at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire pressure level. The vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire pressure, measured in PSI, is indicated on the door jamb.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.8

Tire pressure should be checked while the tires are still the same temperature as the surrounding air, before driving has warmed them.

Driving heats the air inside, so a warm tire reads high and hides how flat it really is.

Check tire pressure when the tires are the same temperature as the surrounding air.

A penny placed head-down in a tire's deepest groove shows whether the tread is gone: if all of Lincoln's head is visible, the tire is too worn to drive on.

It is a measurement anyone can make at the curb, which is the only reason it gets made at all.

Place the coin with President Abraham Lincoln’s head into the tire’s deepest groove.

Studded tires may be used in Ohio only between the first of November and the fifteenth of April.

Studs chew bare pavement, so the window closes when the ice does.

In Ohio, studded tires are legal from November 1 through April 15.

On the test

Where do you find the tire pressure your vehicle was designed for?

On the door jamb, recorded in PSI. The number molded into the tire is its maximum, not the pressure your car was designed around. Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.8: “Maintain the tires at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire pressure level. The vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire pressure, measured in PSI, is indicated on the door jamb.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
